Baumé Hydrometer
Glass densimeter with Baumé scale (°Be) for density and concentration measurement.
Direct reading by flotation. Calibrated at 20 °C. High precision and easy use. Available in various measuring ranges.
The glass hydrometer with a Baumé scale is an instrument designed to determine the density and concentration of liquids using the principle of flotation, providing a direct and immediate reading in Baumé degrees (°Be).
Its construction includes an enlarged lower body that ensures stability during measurement, while the upper stem incorporates the graduated scale for an accurate reading.
Made of glass, it offers excellent chemical resistance and transparency, facilitating the observation of the meniscus and improving measurement accuracy.
Operating Principle
The hydrometer is based on the variation of liquid density:
Higher concentration means less immersion depth
Lower concentration means greater immersion depth
The reading is taken directly on the Baumé scale at the point of intersection with the liquid's meniscus.
Calibration and Conditions of Use
The instrument is calibrated at 20 °C, therefore:
Distilled water has a reference value of 0 °Be
Measurements outside this temperature require correction using tables
To ensure reliable results:
The sample must be at rest
Without bubbles or impurities
With controlled temperature
