The Dean-Stark apparatus is a laboratory device designed for the precise determination of water content in liquid samples using the azeotropic distillation method.
This system allows the separation of water present in oils, fats, resins, and petrochemical products using an immiscible solvent (such as toluene or xylene), which facilitates co-distillation and subsequent separation by density difference.
The apparatus incorporates a graduated trap where the separated water is collected, allowing its direct quantification with high precision and reproducibility.
Manufactured from borosilicate glass, it offers excellent thermal and chemical resistance, making it suitable for demanding laboratory working conditions.
Principle of operation
During the process, the sample is heated in the presence of an organic solvent immiscible with water. The generated vapor condenses, and the resulting liquid separates into phases, with the water accumulating in the device's graduated trap, where it can be measured directly.
